What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

When you begin looking at addiction treatment options, you will find there are several different levels of care available. Trying to understand the differences between them can get confusing, especially if you are unfamiliar with addiction treatment.

More often than not, individuals who are struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction begin their treatment journey with a detoxification program. These programs give you the opportunity to allow your body to go through the withdrawal process, with medical supervision. For many, this can be an uncomfortable process so being in a detox program allows medical staff to give medications that can help ease your symptoms.

After you have safely finished your detox program, you can consider inpatient treatment. These programs can range from 30 to 90 days. These programs will focus on helping you navigate your early stages in recovery and developing your relapse prevention skills. Continuing treatment when you return home is usually recommended for continued support while you adjust to your sobriety.

This is where Intensive Outpatient Programs, also known as IOP, can help. These programs can serve as a transition from an inpatient program to an outpatient. IOPs are considered outpatient treatment, however, the difference is in the intensity of the treatment.

What to Expect During Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

So how does Intensive Outpatient Treatment differ from Inpatient Treatment and Outpatient Treatment? The reality is that IOP programs have similarities to both of these treatment options.

Intensive Outpatient Programs use similar treatment approaches you would find in both treatment options. This would include group therapy, individual therapy, and addiction education. Depending on the treatment facility, you may have access to a Physician who can provide you with Medically Assisted Therapy.

IOP programs are similar to Inpatient Treatment Programs, in the sense that they require a substantial amount of time in treatment each week. Minimally, you are expected to be in 9 hours of group each week, with an hour of individual therapy as well. You may be asked to participate in more than 9 hours depending on your treatment needs.

Intensive Outpatient Programs are considered Outpatient treatment. This means you will not be living at the treatment center. If your home is a safe, sober, and supportive environment, then you are fortunate. If you have concerns about living at home, you can consider looking at local Sober Homes.

What are the Benefits of Intensive Outpatient Treatment in Ohio?

Why should you choose an IOP program, compared to the other addiction treatment options? There are several benefits that you can take advantage of.

If you have recently completed an inpatient treatment program, you are coming from a treatment center where you were surrounded by staff who could support you when needed. Your days were structured and planned for you, to avoid boredom. You were engaging in treatment that encouraged you to move forward in your recovery.

Continuing in these behaviors can be challenging when you return home, if you are not used to developing your own healthy routine. IOP programs can help provide you with structure and routine, as well as having your focus on moving forward in your recovery. You will build on the relapse prevention skills you previously learned. Additionally, you will also continue receiving support from the staff.

IOP programs give you a place to come and talk about your challenges and successes as you navigate the early stages of your recovery. Individual sessions and group sessions can be supportive and a healthy place to talk about concerns you have. Mental health concerns can be addressed in an individual group session.

How to Find Intensive Outpatient Rehab in Ohio

After learning about Ohio Intensive Outpatient Programs, let’s take a moment to talk about how you can find one near you. There are a few ways that you can go about this. Your first option would be to talk about your concerns with your Primary Care Physician. After understanding your concerns, your Physician can provide you with a treatment referral.

A second option would be to contact your insurance provider. You can reach a representative by calling the number on the back of your card or accessing your account information through their website. Your insurance company will be able to provide you with the names of treatment facilities in your area that are in-network. The additional benefit of choosing this route is you can gain a better understanding of what you would need to pay.

The last option would be to create a discharge plan with outpatient treatment after completing a higher level of care. Detox and inpatient rehab programs can help you locate a facility that has an IOP program, and can help you contact them for your initial appointment.

The Findlay Recovery Center is located about two hours away from Cleveland, in Findlay, OH. We are a drug and alcohol addiction treatment facility that offers an Intensive Outpatient Program in Ohio. We recognize the challenges that come up when someone is asking for help with their drug and alcohol addiction. Addiction can turn your life upside down, and trying to make it right side up can be overwhelming. Our clinical team can provide you with the support, knowledge, and resources to help you begin your recovery.

At the Findlay Recovery Center, many individuals whom we work with begin their treatment in our detoxification program. Regular use of drugs and alcohol can change the way your body functions, so when you stop using, you will experience withdrawal symptoms. If you have been abusing alcohol or benzodiazepines, there are dangers associated with withdrawal, which means that you should be monitored by a medical professional. At our treatment facility, our staff will support you through this difficult process. For most, one week in detox is a sufficient amount of time to cope with the negative symptoms that arise. After completing detox, you can then begin engaging in your addiction treatment program.

Our inpatient rehab treatment will be tailored to your specific needs. We all have unique experiences that brought us to where we are, which means that there will likely be differences in the addiction treatment you need. We will provide you with education about addiction and recovery, address other mental health concerns you may have, and work to develop an effective relapse prevention plan that will assist you when you return home. We want to make sure you feel prepared and confident when you complete your treatment program.

At the Findlay Recovery Center, we recognize the strength and courage it takes to look into addiction treatment. It is not easy to look at ourselves and do the work to improve our lives. It is normal for individuals to experience an array of emotions while engaging in treatment. Our staff will provide compassionate care during your time with us.
If you, or someone you love, could benefit from an Ohio IOP, we encourage you to call the Findlay Recovery Center at (855) 605-0129. Our representatives would love to talk you through our different treatment options and see what would best meet your needs.
