What is Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Addiction is a disease that will continue to create chaos in our lives, if we do not get help. You can become distant from your friends and develop strained relationships with your family. You may begin to struggle at work or be impaired at work. New legal concerns are a risk for individuals struggling with addiction.

Whether you have hit rock bottom, or your family has held an intervention for you, something has changed for you to be open to the idea of addiction treatment. When you do reach this point in your journey, you can begin looking for addiction treatment programs near you.

One of the levels of care available to you would be outpatient treatment. While inpatient treatment is often recommended for individuals struggling with addiction, it is not always a realistic choice. It may not be possible to stay away from home for 30 to 90 days. Depending on the severity of your addiction, you may be able to go into an outpatient program.

Another path to outpatient treatment can begin at a detox or inpatient rehab program. For individuals who are able to engage in an inpatient treatment program, outpatient treatment can provide a continuation of support and treatment.

Outpatient treatment programs typically involve a variety of treatment approaches including group therapy, individual therapy, addiction education, and medically assisted therapy with a Physician. Your treatment program should be specialized to your specific needs. For example, if you have a history of mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or trauma, you should have access to treatment for these concerns.

What are the Levels of Outpatient Rehab in Ohio?

Outpatient treatment is a broad phrase which refers to treatment that occurs while you live at home. The alternative to this is inpatient treatment, where you live at the treatment facility during your treatment. Within outpatient treatment, there are several levels of care you can progress through while you move through your recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program, also known as IOP, is a level of outpatient treatment that resembles characteristics of an inpatient rehab program. IOP treatment includes group therapy, individual therapy, medication management, and addiction education.  IOPs are typically offered in the morning or the evening so that participants can maintain their daily routines while engaging in treatment. These programs can range from 9 to 15 hours of group therapy each week with an additional hour for individual therapy.

Outpatient treatment is another option for addiction recovery. Routine outpatient treatment can occur after inpatient rehab, after an Intensive Outpatient Program, or for those who have a mild substance abuse disorder. Outpatient treatment typically reflects the progress made in your recovery. As an example, when you first begin the outpatient treatment, you may be enrolled in several group sessions each week with one individual session. As you accomplish your treatment goals, you may find your group schedule decreases to reflect this.

What to Look for in an Ohio Outpatient Rehab?

If you are at the point where you are looking for outpatient addiction treatment, take a moment to recognize the progress you have made so far. You have come from a place of active addiction and denial to see that your use is a problem. Some people never get to the point of acceptance that you have.

Since Outpatient treatment allows you to remain at home when you are not in treatment, the location of the facility will be important for you. Keep in mind that you will be able to begin getting back into your routine and responsibilities, so keeping the commute time in mind would be helpful.

The cost of treatment is, unfortunately, a factor you will likely need to consider as well. To learn more about what your responsibility would be, you can contact your insurance company. They will be able to be specific about your plan coverage.

When it comes to the Outpatient Treatment Program itself, you will want to make sure they are able to provide the treatment you need. Some treatment providers specialize in particular substances of abuse, such as alcohol or opioids. If you have any other mental health concerns, you will want to choose a treatment facility that is able to give you the care that you need. Research has shown that if you struggle with addiction and another mental health concern, you’re more likely to have a successful recovery when you receive treatment for both, at the same time.

Another important characteristic to be mindful of is that the program you choose tailors your treatment program. You are a unique person who deserves more than a “cookie-cutter” program.  This means you would want to look for a program that has a variety of treatment approaches, specialized treatment programs, and schedules. The providers should also take your unique differences into consideration when developing your treatment plan. Outpatient treatment is designed to be a support for you while you navigate the changes in your life.
