What to Bring to Rehab for a Successful Recovery Stay

When preparing for drug detox, it is critical to understand which items are prohibited by your treatment center and what to bring to rehab for a better stay.

There are very rigorous restrictions in place at drug and alcohol detox centers regarding what you can and cannot bring with you while in treatment. Most centers include a recommended packing checklist, as well as a list of items that are not permitted.

Addiction recovery centers allow you to bring the essentials. The policies on supplementary products differ from center to center.

As soon as you arrive at the rehabilitation facility, you will check in and begin the admissions process. During this time, the admissions personnel at your center will inspect your luggage to ensure that they are safe and that no forbidden goods have been brought in. Some facilities will also keep a record of what you bring in order to ensure that you do not forget anything when you depart.

The policies of each treatment facility differ, and some are more stringent than others. It is generally recommended that you bring the following items with you:

Generally speaking, jewelry that you wear every day and perceive to be a necessity, such as your wedding ring or a watch, is acceptable. Keep valuables at home if you do not want to risk losing them.

Current prescription medication in its original drugstore bottle with the information label still attached should also be taken. Liquid drugs must be brand new and in their original packaging. You should also bring a list of all of your medications, as well as the dosages for each of them.

What Clothes Should You Bring?

Almost all rehabs have a very specific clothing code, so keep this in mind as you are putting together your belongings. If you are not sure how to dress for the weather, layering alternatives such as T-shirts, sweaters, and jackets are a good idea to have. Keep in mind that you may have a restricted amount of space in your room, so try not to overdo it.

It is likely that you will have access to a clothes washer at your center, so bringing a week’s worth of clothes should be plenty. Make sure to pack clothes that are simple to wash and do not require extra care, such as dry cleaning, before you leave.

Personal Hygiene and Beauty Products

The majority of rehabs mandate that all hygiene and beauty products be absolutely free of alcohol. Others will allow you to bring products that do not contain alcohol in the first three ingredients. It is best to get in contact and find out before you pack.  Aerosols should not be brought.

You may also be required to take some form of identification, such as your passport and/or driving license. If you are hoping to stay in touch with your loved ones at home, you may need cash for the telephones and paper, envelopes, and stamps for letter-writing.

Rooms in addiction recovery centers are generally a blank canvas, so taking some photos of your family and friends can help to give it a personal touch and bring you comfort during a difficult period.
