What is Partial Hospitalization Treatment?

Denial is a common experience where individuals who are abusing drugs and alcohol do not see their use as a problem. To those around them, the problem is obvious. However, for the individual struggling, it can take time to move past their denial. Once they do, they are then at a point where the time to look for help has come. This can be an overwhelming experience. There are many different programs available, and it can be tough to narrow down what you think would be the best fit.

It is understandable that finding treatment can be an overwhelming experience. We are going to focus on breaking down what you will find in a Partial Hospitalization Program. By the end of this article, you will understand how it differs from inpatient rehab programs and outpatient treatment options.

What is Partial Hospitalization Designed For?

A Partial Hospitalization Program can be referred to as PHP or an addiction day program. A PHP will have components from both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. For example, the amount of treatments arranged for each day will vary from 6 to 8 hours 4 to 5 days a week, which is similar to the structure that you would find in an inpatient rehab program.

PHP is designed for you to return home after you complete your treatment for the day, similar to outpatient treatment. Because you are not staying in the treatment facility, it is important to make sure that you have a supportive, drug and alcohol-free home that you can return to. For some, this may mean looking into alternative housing options such as Sober Homes.

These programs can use a variety of treatment approaches including group therapy, individual therapy, addiction education groups, and alternative therapies. Depending on your provider, you may have the opportunity to take advantage of specialized treatment programs for other mental health concerns.

What to Expect During Partial Hospitalization Treatment in Ohio?

When you first contact a treatment provider, the first step will include having an intake appointment. During this appointment, you will meet with a member of the Clinical Team who will spend time understanding your addiction and other concerns. They will determine if this is the correct level of care for you. If you need to attend a detox program, or an inpatient rehab program, they will help you find one.  Many individuals who engage in addiction day programs have recently completed detox and an inpatient rehab program. This allows you to have some sobriety before returning home.

During your assessment, your staff member will also see if there are other programs that you would benefit from. Common mental health struggles that can occur with addiction include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, grief, and PTSD. Addiction treatment programs may offer specialized services including men, women, the LGBTQ+ community, professionals, military individuals, and first responders.

Partial Hospitalization treatment programs will use evidence-based clinical practices. This means that they will use therapeutic approaches that have been researched, and found to be effective with addiction treatment. This ensures that you are getting the best possible care. Your treatment plan will likely include a collaboration between yourself and the staff to ensure that your needs are being met.

While you are at the treatment facility, your days will be structured and laid out for you. For many, addiction took away any routine and structure your days may have had, and replaced them with chaos and inconsistency. Having a routine and structure can help you avoid boredom which can contribute to cravings and subsequent relapses. The hope is getting used to a routine in treatment, you will see the benefits and find your own routine at home.

What are the Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program?

There are several benefits to a Partial Hospitalization when it comes to your addiction. Everyone has a different path that has led them to where they are in their addiction. Because of this, it is understandable that everyone’s needs in recovery are different. Differences can come from how long you were in active addiction, the consequences of your addiction, other mental health concerns you struggle with, and your goals for the future.

For some, this means that they need more support after completing an inpatient rehab program. Needing more support is nothing to shy away from. The overall goal of an addiction inpatient program is to support you in your recovery. Individuals who have reservations about leaving an inpatient program should consider an addiction day program.

Partial Hospitalization Programs can give you the opportunity to start navigating your recovery at home while still receiving a high level of support. This can include rebuilding your relationships, ending unhealthy relationships, setting boundaries for yourself, returning to work, and coping with triggers and cravings.

While the time commitment for these programs can feel a bit much, it is important to remember that these programs are not long-term solutions. Once you reach your treatment goals, you would likely be encouraged to start an outpatient treatment program which would have fewer treatment hours.

How to Find Partial Hospitalization Treatment in Ohio

There are a few ways that you can find an Ohio PHP. One way would be to speak with your Primary Care Physician about your concerns and ask for a referral. A second option would be to contact your insurance provider and ask for an in-network referral. A third option would be to receive a referral, after completing detox or an inpatient treatment program.

When you are looking at the different options you have, be mindful of the characteristics discussed above. Specifically, the use of evidence-based practices, the availability of alternative therapies, and the availability of mental health treatment. The location will likely be an important characteristic for a PHP program, since you will be traveling to the treatment facility multiple times each week.
